Held every spring, the CAP conference brings together counselors, parents, administrators and experts to discuss important issues in our community.
CAP 2016- The Under Resourced: Strategies for Family and Student Engagement
Nassau Counselors’ Association and Adelphi University co-sponsored another successful Counselors, Administrators, Parents (CAP) conference on Friday, March 18th, 2016. One hundred and thirty eight professionals attended the event, all anticipating opportunities to learn about economic class and culture and how they influence learning. The day long conference, “The Under-Resourced: Strategies for Family and Student Engagement” examined ways in which we all can better engage with the students and families we serve.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Bethanie Hamlet Tucker, a Professor of Education at Averett University, spoke to the audience about the tenants of the AHA Process: A Framework for Understanding Poverty. Her interactive and motivational speaking style was appreciated by our conference attendees. Dr. Tucker shared real life stories as well as the data driven research of Dr. Ruby Payne. Additionally, Dr. Tucker also kept the audience alert with anticipation for alternative approaches to this dynamic issue, focusing on tangible examples from her book, Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Student.
Joy Connolly, the Directory of Education Program Services at Child Care Council of Nassau, Inc., shared current educational research and ideas. Her workshop, “Are You Culturally Competent?” discussed how culture and other factors influence our communication styles and interpersonal behaviors.
The panel discussion, led by Kathleen Dunne, focused on shared knowledge from several alternative school professionals whose years of experience made them experts in working with at risk populations, including dropout prevention and parent engagement techniques.
Many were very pleased with the Networking Fair, which provided the attendees with current grass roots organizations, alternative school programs, and social service agencies that can provide direct services to the families and children we serve.
The Nassau Counselors’ Association has received many accolades from attendees of this program in including, “great, enlightening, engaging experience,” “always pleasant and informative,” “well knowledged presenters,” “well planned,” “best CAP Conference ever!” Many thanks to the committee members who worked tirelessly on this event: Kathleen Dunne, Robert Germino, Andrea Porzelt, Seeta Ramprasad, and Edward Tacchi.
