As counselors and pupil personnel professionals, our jobs are categorized by a good deal of stress, and we have all read the research indicating that stress is a leading cause of health issues. So, what if the research showed that one medicine could improve your overall health and reduce stress? Would you be interested? Well, that research is in. The amazing prescription is altruism – selflessness through helping other people – and it works! The kind that boosts your health and happiness the most doesn’t come from writing a check to charity and helping friends and family (although very fulfilling) but from volunteering with strangers. And "It's even more effective to help strangers in the company of kindred spirits, such as through involvement with a supportive organization of volunteers.” (Luks & H. Andrews, Ph.D., Columbia U., NYC) Research also shows that happy people tend to have strong social networks and spend a lot of time cultivating them. So, if socializing and volunteering is what the doctors order and the key to being happy & healthy, then NCA has many opportunities to improve your overall well being!
